42.0724 oz Troy of pure silver. Calculated by using: 43 medals X 32.9 grams = 1414.7 grams sterling equals 42.724 troy ounces of. This is one of the few remaining completely complete sets surviving. Made by Franklin Mint in the early 1970's.
These are struck in sterling silver. Deep cameo proof finish, set is problem free. We see it ended with Nancy Reagan.Random medal was carefully removed (not fingerprinted or wiped) to be placed upon a reliable jewelry scale. Photo shows weight in GRAMS. Part of the beauty of these sets was the detail the engravers put into their work.
Franklin Mint employed some of the best medalic artists available of the time. The strike and relief are also excellent. If you are a collector of modern commemoratives, THIS SET is actually nicer than what the US Mint produced in recent time. MANY of these sets (and the other underappreciated nicely made items from the 1970's) have been scrapped and melted.
I also understand these Franklin Mint products were made from US strategic silver stockpile which got acquired by Franklin Mint. It seldom comes up the source of the silver which made these things, which too is an interesting topic. There are other sets and pieces to go pursue. This listing is really all about a collector who is seeking it.
