The New York Bank Hoard. The Silver Franklin Half Dollar. The 90% Silver Franklin Half Dollar was born into existence by the ambitions and admiration of United States Mint Director, Nellie Tayloe Ross. Ross was enamored with the works of one of our great Founding Fathers ##x2013; Benjamin Franklin, and wished to honor his memory by having a coin bear his likeness. As an added bit of irony, Ben Franklin actually opposed the idea of putting portraits on coins; instead he actively advocated for placing proverbs on the coins about which the holder might profit upon reflection.
The Mint Director then approached the chief engraver, John R Sinnock, and instructed that he begin work on a design for a new half dollar depicting the image of Benjamin Franklin. Sinnock had some previous experience with coin designs utilizing Franklin and images associated with our Founding Father. Drawing from his earlier half-dime motif, as well as the Liberty Bell that he engraved for the reverse of the 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence Commemorative Coin, came to be what we would know as the Franklin Half Dollar. The obverse of the coin is simply a bust of Benjamin Franklin facing right, with ##x201C;Liberty##x201D; above and ##x201C;In God We Trust##x201D; below. On the reverse of the coin is a slightly adapted version of the Liberty Bell as found on the backside of the 1926 Sesquicentennial half-dollar, with a small eagle situated to the immediate right.
Benjamin Franklin was the fifth person to be engraved on a coin that didn##x2019;t bear the likeness of Lady Liberty, or some other ideological figure. He was also the first non-United States President to be put on a regular issue circulating coin. These rolls can be acquired at a very reasonable price based on their intrinsic silver content.
