This large sterling silver Emergence of Spring Faberge egg is numbered on the bottom side of the egg. A total of 750 were made. Inside the rim of the stand, it is also hallmarked Sterling, 1977 and has the Franklin Mint FM symbol. Weighing almost 13 troy ounces (or over one troy pound) and standing three inches tall, it is solid sterling silver with vermeil gilt filigree and accented with six diamond-shaped malachite gems. With stand, the height is 4 and a half inches.
Inside the egg is a beautiful hand-enameled multi-color sterling silver butterfly surprise and beneath it, a gilded silver long-stemmed rose resting on a lining of royal green velvet. The outside of the silver egg is decorated with pure gold and tiny genuine malachite gemstones. The tripod stand is original to the egg and is also made of sterling silver vermeil with malachite accents. The removable and wearable bee pin or brooch that rests upon the rose is solid 18k gold and weighs a bit over 6 grams. It is hallmarked FM 18k. The egg, stand and bee pin are in beautiful undamaged condition and always in a non-smoking home.
The egg has toned slightly but this patina is quite beautiful. What is Included: The original vermeil tripod stand with diamond-shaped pieces of polished malachite on each foot is included (a valuable item in its own right). The stand has three amber-colored rubber-like stoppers at the tops of the legs that cushion the egg, raise it up, and keep it from being scratched, a nice design detail, and the 6 gram bee pin hallmarked 18k gold.
The egg also comes with its original paperwork. This set is complete including the original Certificate of authenticity. To open: Depress the malachite diamond on the opposite side of the egg from the hinge.
Latch and hinge work perfectly. Details: The Franklin Mint has made many valuable collectibles but this is one of the most expensive and beautiful of all. And only 750 were made in 1977. A similar egg made the next year had a much larger total of 1500 made. It is unknown how many of these silver masterpieces have survived the melting pot during silver price spikes but the number can only decrease over time.
Date of creation = 1977 Height= 3 inches for the egg or 4.5 inches total with the egg on the stand Egg= Over 1 troy pound of sterling silver or 12.76 troy ounces Bee Pin= 6.4 grams, 18kt gold Sterling Silver Vermeil Stand= 21.5 grams Egg and Stand = 13.45 troy ounces Condition: As the egg, pin, and stand are over 40 years old, there is some toning. This can be removed if the new owner so desires but most collectors like a natural patina.Where It Was Made: The egg and stand and bee pin were designed in the United States in the famous Faberge style of Russia, and made in the Netherlands. About the Franklin Mint: An American institution founded in 1964, the prolific Franklin Mint is known for its innovative design, meticulous attention to detail, and creating some of the highest-quality collectible products in the world. The Franklin Mint's archives include over 12,000 product lines, including limited edition fine art sculptures. Vermeil (ver-MAY) is not the same thing at all as gold-filled or gold-plated.
Vermeil means lasting quality and value. It is a layer of gold permanently fused to solid sterling silver, precious metal on precious metal. It will be stamped 925 for sterling. Also called gilded silver, it is a durable product that can be worn daily and passed on to the next generation.
The gold wont rub off or flake off. Gold-filled (GF) jewelry can also be very durable but the gold is fused to a base metal or alloy. There is at least 100 times more gold on a gold-filled item than on a gold-plated item.
Finally, theres gold-plating (GP) which is a thin layer of gold on base metal that will usually wear or flake off in time. If solid gold is out of your reach, try vermeil. It is a truly practical alternative to solid gold and it has been around for more than two centuries. The White House even has a Vermeil Room full of antique vermeil tableware.
